Palm Springs….Kings Hwy Restaurant at the Ace Hotel
November 11, 2021
On our way home from a night out in Palm Springs, we happened to pass by King’s Hwy Restaurant at the Ace Hotel. https://www.kingshighwaydiner.com/. “That’s a great place to eat”, we were told. “It’s known for it’s good food.” I remember that it went through my mind: “Now who would have thought?” For me the Ace Hotel is synonymous with a young hip clientele, long nights and afternoons at the pool. Gourmet food is not the first thing that comes to mind. But then again, this is Palm Springs and I have truly never had less than delicious here.
So the next day, after a lot of looking at beautiful homes, we realized suddenly that we were hungry. At that moment we just happened to be passing the Ace with its Kings Hwy Restaurant logo out front. And that’s how it happened that we had a most unexpected but delicious lunch.
It might not seem like it in from the photo of our avocado sandwich in the distance, but that was one huge serving. Lovely, fresh squares of avocado that must have come from a mighty big avocado. It was served with a mound of sprouts on top. That would have been enough of a good thing in itself. But we also shared an arugula salad with hazelnuts, goat’s cheese, and fresh California strawberries. On top was the prize of it all: a fresh strawberry dressing. Now, I have had strawberries on my salads. But this was my first for a strawberry dressing. And I keep thinking now: Do I have to wait all the way until next Spring and fresh strawberry season to try this at home?
More about the Kings Highway at the Ace Hotel: It is in keeping with the Mid Century Modern look of the surrounding area. And it was a great prelude to our next adventure: https://roadtosuchness.compalm-springs-mid-century-modern/ The restaurant is much as it would have been if you entered in the mid 50’s with your grandparents. The details are still there. The kitchen, of course, is sparkly shiny new, but it all still has that feel of mid-century. Sadly, the only thing missing for me were my grandparents.
