Before leaving Santa Fe for Taos, New Mexico, I looked on the menu of The Farmhouse Cafe and Bakery. They claim to be the place in Taos for farm fresh and local. If you are excited about eating food sourced from the nearby twenty local farms and ranches in Taos, then The Farmhouse Cafe and Bakery is your place. The land stretches wide to the mountains in Taos. I feel like I am in farm country when I am there. So eating fresh food picked locally seemed like just the thing to do.
We were seated inside the restaurant when we first arrived. In the middle of January it would have felt cozy and comforting. But for mid September, temperatures still high, I really wanted to sit outside. Winter would be coming soon enough. When a table became available, a very sweet server scooted us outside. After a hectic and unusual drive to Taos from Santa Fe, I just let out a sigh and leaned back.
Hectic? Yes. There were detours on the way up to Taos due to road work. Turned out to be fun, though, as we saw places that would have gone unnoticed.
Now to the the important part of this post: The food! I had some serious difficulty choosing what to order. This is not unusual for me, especially if the menu has some tempting listings for lunch. And the Farmhouse did. I looked at the menu the day before our trip and kept eyeing one item: The Curry Squash Pie. Curry pie sounded intriguing. But when we sat in the restaurant, scanning the menu, Chicken Pot Pie hit me with nostalgia and great memories. In spite of the fact that I am 98% vegetarian, I had to make a hard choice.
When they brought the pot pie to the table I thought I would never be able to eat it all. It was the size of a quarter of a pie pan. But in the end, I ate it all. It was seriously that good. (And well, I was hungry after our unexpected detoured road trip to get there.)
Forward ahead a month to last night. I just happened to see a review of the The Farm in a local magazine. The Curry Squash Pie was getting a rave review by a man that is strictly a meat eater. And he was proud of it, it seemed to me. Why he even chose the dish I’m not sure. He seemed baffled himself and described his love for the squash dish as a shock to even himself. And he professed a return visit to The Farm. Returning to Taos is not so easy for me and probably something I will not do in the next several months.
In the meantime, I am seriously thinking of inventing a curried squash pie in my own kitchen. In the meantime, if you are in Taos, I would seriously recommend The Farmhouse Cafe and Bakery.
